Sports Event Chinese, Volume 1 is a situational textbook in the "Practical Chinese" series, comprising 16 lessons. It approaches the subject from the perspective of spectators and novice volunteers, covering topics such as: buying tickets and entering the venue, finding seats, security screening, scores and fouls, substitutions and time-outs, coaching commands, warm-up running and swimming, minor injuries and serious injuries, and championship finals. Kevin is a Kenyan international student pursuing a master's degree in sports management in Hangzhou, as well as an intern and volunteer at the Jiangtide Basketball Club. Together with Coach Chang, team physician Dr. Gu, classmate Xiao Lei, and venue manager Manager Qi, he experiences authentic real-life scenarios at the Qiantang Sports Arena, the Jiangtide Basketball Club, and Zhedong University of Physical Education (all fictional) in Hangzhou. Each lesson is organized into eight sections: text, vocabulary, notes, pronunciation exercises, conversation exercises, grammar, Chinese characters, and cultural knowledge. All explanations are given in English, the full text is annotated with pinyin, and the content is aligned with HSK Levels 2–3.
